Empirically-Derived Analytic Models of Wide-Area TCP Connections: Extended Report

We analyze 2.5 million TCP connections that occurred during 14 wide-area traffic traces. The traces were gathered at five “stub” networks and two internetwork gateways, providing a diverse look at wide-area traffic. We derive analytic models describing the random variables associated with telnet, nntp, smtp, and ftp connections, and present a methodology for comparing the effectiveness of the a...

An Empirical Workload Model for Driving Wide-Area TCP/IP Network Simulations

Abstract We present an artificial workload model of wide-area internetwork traffic. The model can be used to drive simulation experiments of communication protocols and flow and congestion control experiments. The model is based on analysis of wide-area TCP/IP traffic collected from one industrial and two academic networks. The artificial workload model uses both detailed knowledge and measured...

Experimental and Simulation Performance Results of TCP/IP over High-Speed ATM over ACTS

To assist in the design and understanding of future global networks, this paper describes the practical and simulation experiences gained from a TCP/IP on ATM network over a high speed satellite link and presents performance comparison studies of such networks with the same host/traffic configurations over local area (LAN) and wide area (WAN) networks. It was found that the satellite systems de...

Satellite Network Performance Measurements Using Simulated Multi-User Internet Traffic

As a number of diverse satellite systems (both Low Earth Orbit and Geostationary systems) are being designed and deployed, it becomes increasingly important to be able to test these systems under realistic traffic loads. While software simulations can provide valuable input into the system design process, it is crucial that the physical system be tested so that actual network devices can be emp...

Skip This Paper - RINASim: Your Recursive InterNetwork Architecture Simulator

Recursive InterNetwork Architecture is a cleanslate approach to how to deal with the current issues of the Internet based on the traditional TCP/IP networking stack. Instead of using a fixed number of layers with dedicated functionality, RINA proposes a single generic layer with programmable functionality that may be recursively stacked. We introduce a brand new framework for modeling and simul...
